Illustrative example only. It is not a typical or expected refund.

One fee, and only if HMRC pays you.

15% of the refund HMRC actually pays you, minimum fee £30.

The refund includes any interest HMRC adds to it.

  • No win, no fee: if HMRC pays you nothing, you pay us nothing. If HMRC does pay you, we collect our fee by Direct Debit 14 days after the payment.
  • If HMRC later reduces your repayment, we recalculate our fee and refund anything you’ve overpaid.
  • We don’t take on claims we expect to be under £75.
  • We’re not VAT registered, so no VAT is added.

You don’t have to use an agent. You can claim directly from HMRC yourself for free: check how to claim a tax refund on GOV.UK (GOV.UK website).

What we can help with

Whether you can claim, and how much, depends on your circumstances. We look at each case individually.

  • Work expenses Form P87

Tax relief on costs you had to pay for your job and weren’t fully paid back for, such as some travel to temporary workplaces.

  • Repayment claims Form R40

In some situations, people who aren’t in Self Assessment use form R40 to claim back Income Tax they’ve overpaid.

  • Marriage Allowance Personal Allowance transfer

Lets you transfer some of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner, if you both meet HMRC’s conditions.

We don’t prepare Self Assessment tax returns.

Your refund never touches our account.

HMRC pays any refund straight to you. We never receive, hold or pass on a client’s refund, and we will never ask for your bank details to receive one.

  1. HMRCtoYou: Your refund, paid directly
  2. WiseReturntoYou: Our invoice, after HMRC has paid you
  3. YoutoWiseReturn: Our fee, by Direct Debit 14 days later

How it works

  1. Tell us about your situation

We ask about your job, your travel and what you paid for. No receipts yet. We only ask for those once you’ve agreed to go ahead.

  2. A person reviews your case

Every case is checked by a person, not decided by a computer. If your claim looks likely to be under £75, we’ll tell you and won’t take it on.

  3. You sign up

If we can help, you read and sign our terms online and set up a Direct Debit for our fee. Nothing is taken until HMRC has paid you. The law also requires us to check your identity.

  4. We prepare your claim

We prepare your claim for HMRC, based on what you’ve told us and the evidence you’ve provided.

  5. HMRC pays you directly

Any refund goes straight from HMRC to you. We never receive, hold or pass on your refund.

  6. We collect our fee

Once HMRC has paid you, we send you an invoice. We collect the fee by Direct Debit 14 days after HMRC paid you, so there’s nothing for you to do.

Questions

Something else? Email us at contact@wisereturn.co.uk.

Do I have to use an agent to claim?
No. You can claim directly from HMRC yourself for free. Check how to claim a tax refund on GOV.UK (GOV.UK website). Our fee is for preparing your claim for you.
When do I pay your fee?
Only after HMRC has paid you. Our fee is 15% of the refund HMRC actually pays you, minimum fee £30. The refund includes any interest HMRC adds. We send you an invoice and collect the fee by Direct Debit 14 days after HMRC paid you. If HMRC pays you nothing, you pay us nothing.
What if HMRC reduces my refund later?
We recalculate our fee based on what HMRC finally pays you, and refund anything you’ve overpaid us.
Does my refund go through you?
No. HMRC pays any refund straight to you. We never receive, hold or pass on a client’s refund, and we will never ask for your bank details to receive one.
Will you tell me whether I can claim?
A person reviews every case before we take it on. Whether you can claim, and how much, depends on your circumstances. We don’t take on claims we expect to be under £75.
What do I need to get started?
Just an email address. You answer questions about your job, your courses and postings, and your travel, and you can upload documents such as a JPA Course Booking Summary or Joining Instructions. We don’t ask for receipts until you’ve agreed to go ahead.
How long does it take?
You can follow every step in your account, and we’ll tell you if we need anything. Once a claim reaches HMRC, HMRC sets its own processing times. Check HMRC’s current timescales on GOV.UK.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. You can cancel within 14 days of signing our terms without giving a reason, and you can end the agreement at any time after that. If HMRC pays you a refund from a claim we’ve already submitted, our fee is still due on that refund.
How do you keep my information safe?
Your account and documents are stored in the UK, encrypted, and only you and WiseReturn can see them. You sign in with a one-time link sent to your email, so there’s no password to steal. We only ask for identity details once you’ve decided to go ahead, because the law requires us to check them.
Who is WiseReturn for?
UK employees. We’re starting with UK Armed Forces personnel, beginning with the Royal Navy. We don’t prepare Self Assessment tax returns.
